There are several consequences of pregnancy. Among them are the swelling of the legs and leg cramps. But you don't have to suffer.

Many things can cause swelling. Among them can be constrictive clothing and walking or standing for long periods.

Many women resort to trying to reduce their salt intake or take diuretics to reduce swelling. This should be avoided. This can be dangerous. The only one who should tell you to take diuretics and reduce salt in your physician.

One way to reduce swelling is to elevate your legs at least six inches whenever possible. Swelling can be caused be the effect of gravity on your legs. By lifting your legs, you can use gravity to your advantage. The blood will increase to other parts your body thus reducing swelling in your legs.

Don't wear tight clothing or shoes. This constricts the blood flow to the rest of your body, which may result in swelling. It also can be uncomfortable.

Drink as much water as possible. This can reduce swelling.

Exercise is also a good way to prevent as well as reduce swelling. This allows you to increase the blood circulation in your body.

Support Hose may also be helpful in reducing swelling.

Although swelling is a normal part of pregnancy. There are some signs your should watch for during pregnancy. Look for abnormal swelling in the feet, face, and hands. Also, look and see if the swelling goes away during the night. If it doesn't go away you should contact your physician and inform him or her of your symptoms. It could be a condition called preeclampsia, which is high blood pressure in pregnant women. This could be dangerous if left untreated.

Leg cramps are caused by the same reasons swelling occurs. It also caused by the pressure on the nerves in the leg. Most women complain of waking up in the middle of the night due to leg cramps. Here are some ways you can prevent them.

One way to prevent leg cramps is to make sure you have enough calcium in your diet. Lack of calcium can cause cramping because it is required for the muscles in your legs to relax. Try drinking a glass of milk before bed or a calcium supplement.

Drink plenty of water.

Stretch before you start your day. This will warm up your muscles especially if you have a job that requires a lot of walking.

If the cramping has not stopped, yet you might have to live with until the birth of your baby. Here are some suggestions on how to relieve cramping.

Massage your trouble spot. This will help get the kinks out.

Stand or Walk on it. It may be painful but it will help it go away.

Apply a hot water bottle or warm pad to your leg. It may be helpful to keep one by your bed at night for convenience.
